The Science of Kundalini

Kundalini is not a Tantric sexual energy, and Kundalini is not a hip new form of asana practice, nor is Kundalini a fiery serpent that whips up the spine resulting in instant enlightenment. Kundalini is the Divine power dwelling within each and every human, no matter what the tradition (or lack thereof). Kundalini is our soul and heart, our deepest and truest inner guidance, our pith and substance.

Kundalini Vidya, or The Science of Kundalini, teaches that Kundalini is coiled three and a half times at the base of the spine in the subtle body, at the entrance to the mooladhara, the first chakra. In every human being, Kundalini is either dormant, or released. Dormant Kundalini, or contained Kundalini, is the life force within, animating the physical vehicle, the subtle body, and the human consciousness. Kundalini is usually released from Her dormancy when a person is at a particular stage of spiritual evolution, but active Kundalini doesn't automatically mean that someone is spiritual or holy. And a Kundalini rising isn’t usually an explosive or disruptive event, creating uncomfortable feelings or wild phenomenon. It's true that She is sometimes released during a traumatic event. But many Kundalini risings develop naturally and uneventfully, guiding the person to teachers, books, changes in life situations, habits, etc, that support the rising and allow it to progress. (Kundalini is not typically released in a Kundalini yoga class, although if someone has active Kundalini somewhere in the subtle body, She might be stirred during a class of this nature).

When Kundalini is released, She rises through one of the channels within the subtle body (there are six), and moves as far as she can towards the end goal (full Realization, Liberation, Enlightenment), steadily guiding the person to a more spiritually focused life, which will improve the rising. This journey will take many lifetimes. Many people with released Kundalini were born this way due to past efforts and merits in other incarnations. When the physical body dies, Kundalini, along with the rest of the subtle body, moves along to the next lifetime. When the new body reaches sexual maturity, Kundalini returns to wherever she was in the previous lifetime, and thus the journey continues.

If you're reading this, you may well have released Kundalini, or perhaps Kundalini is stirring deep within you for the first time. You might have Kundalini waiting to break through one of the caps (linga) within the chakra system, or your Kundalini could be shooting up and down a channel that does not culminate in a full and blessed rising. If there are many energetic symptoms and you're really feeling Kundalini, you might need some help to stabilize your rising, or re-divert the rising into the correct channel. (More information at the end of this post.) People who have ordinary risings, also called blessed risings, don't usually know they have active Kundalini. And they don't necessarily need to know, because Kundalini will continue to guide them to deepen their spiritual practice, to clean up their physical bodies, to transform themselves into the vessels She needs them to be in order to progress towards the ultimate human goal.

When Kundalini is released or when She breaks through a linga (at the heart, or third eye), a person will very likely have a brilliant white light experience, an opening into Oneness, a Divine glimpse... this does not signify Enlightenment. They might well feel Enlightened for hours, days, weeks, but nonetheless it's a glimpse. All the karmas and vasanas, the many lifetimes of habits and ego-longings, all the past traumas and grievances, all of this must be unloaded prior to getting anywhere near the ultimate Realization. Full unloading doesn't occur until Kundalini breaks through the Itara Linga at the Anja (third eye chakra), and comes to rest at Makara point (upper anja). This is a complex science, as intricate and magnificent as the workings of your physical body, and these words are but a glimpse themselves into the beautiful science of Kundalini.

In the history of awakening, there are many people who claim enlightenment and even establish guru-ship and religion after a Kundalini glimpse, especially if they've had an extended glimpse. Here's the marker of full awakening: if you're having thoughts, you're not enlightened. It's as hard for an enlightened person to have thoughts as it is for an unenlightened person NOT to have thoughts. This is a loose quote from Ramana Maharshi, who, after a huge Kundalini awakening, and after many subsequent years of absorption in meditation, finally broke the jar of individuality and merged in Oneness. This is Kundalini's ultimate goal, and she will work her way through the subtle body/consciousness until she achieves her goal.
